The Simple Explanation

My wife Carrie, who is much smarter than I ever thought about being mentioned that many people wanted an explanation of our crest so they could get ideas of their own. Here is a brief explanation of m y thought process and what each section represents:

Family Motto: Taking Initiative for the Benefit of Others was taken from our family scripture (Philippians 2).

I used the idea of four parts of a house from a sermon I once heard from Tommy Nelson, Pastor of Denton Bible Church.

Truth and Security- I used the picture of a foundation because our family’s security is found in the truth of the Gospel.

Knowledge and Discipline- I used the picture of the water faucet to represent plumbing. Plumbing takes out what is bad and brings in what is good. We want our family to be intentional in knowing Scripture so that we can discern what is good and bad.

The New Normal- I heard this term from a friend of mine, John Bryson, and it lined up exactly with what I was wanting for our family. We want to create a New Normal with our family. In other words, we do not want to go with the culture’s idea of normal. We want our family to create a New Normal that lines up with our values.

Warmth and Tradition- I loved the picture of the fireplace to represent a house that is warm, loving and inviting. The fireplace represents the things we do on a nightly basis and on special days that create tradition.

Hope this gives you a little insight as to how we arrived at this stage. Look forward to seeing what God has placed on your heart for your family.

The Idea

It started out as an idea for a Christmas present. I wanted to give Carrie something to hang in the house as a symbol of who we are and what we are about as a family. This past summer I started jotting down notes about some areas that were important to our family. After listening to some sermons and reading some books by men far smarter than me, I began to come up with a modern day family crest. I wanted to create a framework for our family and create a visible symbol that would serve as a daily reminder to us. Once I had my thoughts in order, I handed my idea off to a friend of mine who is a graphic designer. He turned my thoughts into the visible symbol that you see above. I could not have been happier. It was exactly what I wanted for our family and it now hangs in the most prominent spot of our house. I sent my design to a guy that gave me some initial inspiration. Mark Batterson serves as pastor of National Community Church in Washington D.C. He liked it so much that he wanted one for his family. He sent me his ideas and we designed one for the Batterson Family. My goal is to help families create their own family crests and give them a visible symbol to encourage them towards strategic parenting. If you have an interest for one of these, just comment and leave your contact info or email me at bbrady@pdsmemphis.org. We are very much in the initial stages of this but are very excited to see how God is going to use this tool to help families.
